The Transition Year Programme is a unique one-year programme that promotes the personal, social, vocational and educational development of students and prepares them for their role as autonomous, participative and responsible members of society. TY provides a bridge to enable students to make the transition from the more dependent type of learning associated with Junior Cycle to the more independent learning environment associated with Senior Cycle. It encourages the development of a wide range of transferable critical thinking and creative problem solving skills.
It aims to promote personal development and increasing maturity. Half of the timetable is devoted to academic subjects that will benefit the students when they sit their Leaving Certificate Examination. The other half is ever-changing, designed to meet the emerging needs of today’s students. The wide range of modules includes Microsoft Prodigy Learning (ICT), Dance, Mini-Company, Cake Artistry, Self-Defence, Ceramics, Hostess Cookery, Work Experience, Personal Development, Art and Design, Digital Media, Chinese Culture, Young Social Innovators, Development Education and Film Studies. Every year the Transition Year class stages a full-scale musical which is open to the public over three nights in March. All aspects of the production including, sets, costumes, choreography, stage management and publicity are carried out by the TY students under the direction of the Musical Core Team of teachers.
