Sport
Our school Sports programme plays an integral part in the life of students in St. Louis Secondary School. We have been extremely successful over the years across a wide range of sports involving large numbers of our student body. The essential focus of school sport in St. Louis relates to the organisation and conduct of a broad range of school sporting programmes for all students commensurate with their age and ability. We currently offer students the opportunity to take part and represent their school in the following sports:
-
Gaelic Football
Ladies Gaelic Football is currently the fastest growing sport in Ireland and the large numbers of girls in St. Louis taking part makes this evident. In 2006, 130 of St. Louis students represented their school in competitive football at Inter-County level. The 2005, under-14 team won the County Monaghan āCā Championship and represented Monaghan in Ulster. Four teams are currently entered into the Monaghan Championship with the opportunity of advancing into Ulster and All-Ireland series. 2006 also saw the introduction of courses in Foundation level coaching and refereeing for transition year students provided by Monaghan County Board.
-
Basketball
There is a very strong tradition of basketball in St. Louis. Currently, 1st, 2nd and 3rd years are involved in the North Eastern Regional Leagues. An in-school league also allows students to participate in a fun environment. Basketball Ireland is organising coaching and refereeing courses in the school for third and fourth years.
-
Swimming
In 2006 a first year student represented the school in the Ulster Area Swimming heats winning silver medals in the backstroke and individual medley.
-
Athletics
Both cross-country and track and field are organised on a District basis. We compete in the Ulster section and successful competitors can progress to All-Ireland level.
-
Adventure
A new module within the physical education curriculum allows students to prepare for all aspects of outdoor life including camp craft, map reading, orienteering and team work. Transition Years participate in a three day outdoor pursuits course in the Killary Adventure Centre in Galway.
-
Soccer
Students compete in an in-school lunchtime league, which focuses on the fun aspect of school sport.
-
Uni-hoc
An in-school uni-hoc league involving 1st, 2nd and 3rd years is used to reinforce the skill and concept of team play, which is taught during physical education. Every student from every class can take part.
