Transition Year

Transition Year was introduced in St. Louis in 1989. It is a vital year in the life of any student. It acts as bridge or lynch pin which helps smooth the transition between Junior and Leaving Certificate. Before its inception in our school in 1989 a constant sentence from teachers might have been: “If we only had a year to do those extra curricular activities with students”

Curriculum

The broad content of Transition Year with fourteen different Modules and an academic content covering fifteen subjects, provides an enriching experience for students. During Transition Year students get opportunities which would not be available to them in a five-year cycle. A distinct enhancement to each student’s achievement record is being able to complete the E.C.D. L. – an internationally recognised qualification which will be most advantageous to her C.V. and employment opportunities. The broad spectrum of Transition Year Modules in Personal Development, Media Studies, Self Defence, Hostess Cooking, Religion, Craft, Cake Artistry, Dancing, Bridge – Education for Leisure, Art and Design, aim to tap into students talents and creativity and broaden their cultural and personal experiences and make Transition Year a life-changing, worthwhile experience for all who take part in it.

The School Musical

MusicalOne of the high points on the T.Y. calendar every year is the Musical which continues to delight, entertain and uplift both the school audience and the general public. Memorable performances of “Behind the Barricades “, “My Fair Lady”, Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”, “Oliver”, Calamity Jane”, “Bugsy Malone”, have all had packed houses each night.

Work Experience is an integral part of Transition Year and students gain valuable experience in local and national placements.

Trips to Delphi and Killary have proved extremely popular and enjoyable as well as visits to the Dáil, Zoo, Ella’s Barn School of Cake Artistry.

Academic Studies are an integral part of the curriculum and good patterns of study are advocated. Students study eight subjects and at the end of T.Y. they make their final choice regarding the seven they will carry on to Leaving Certificate.
